Traditional Tuareg religious practices in Northern Africa were centred around Animism. With the spread of first Christianity and then Islam these beliefs were adopted and sometimes even mixed with their original animistic beliefs. Most members of theTuareg tribes are viewed as having more moderate Islamic beliefs in this day and age.





The Tuareg Name

The actual Tuareg word is derived from a place called Targa. This is the amazigh name for one of Libya's provinces called Fezzan. This is because the original Tuareg tribes originated from this area of North Africa. The name was first used by the English, French and German during the European colonisation of North Africa and the name is still in common usage today. The name that the Tuareg use to refer to themselves is Imuhagh, with males being referred to as Amajagh and females as Tamajaq.

Commonly known as the blue people because of the indigo blue pigment used in the colouring of their clothing, the Tuareg as a people's are different from many North African tribes in that woman generally do not wear a face veil, but men do. It is believed that the males wearing facial covering originates from the need for protection from the harsh desert sands, although it is also said to ward off and keep out evil spirits. The taking of the veil is also seen as a rite of passage associated with a boy's ascension to maturity. This veil is used in public and conceals everything on the face except for the eyes and the top of the nose.



Tuareg Food

The staple diet of the Tuareg tribesman is made up of a millet porridge, a flatbread called Taguella that is eaten with a heavy sauce and Eghajira, a thick beverage made from millet, dates, sugar and goats cheese. Common dairy foods include cheese and yogurt mad from goat's and camel's milk. They also drink a strong tea called gunpowder tea that is served with mint and sugar in tiny glasses.

Penang War Museum, A Historical Monument

The state of Penang is by area the second smallest state in the nation of Malaysia, but it contains a considerable population. Penang has over the years experienced a varied and turbulent history with numerous military operations having taken place in the area.

Also observable for visitors are cannon firing platforms, kitchens, a logistics centre, a medical centre and sleeping quarters. A particularly unusual feature are the subterranean tunnels that stretch right up to the Straits of Melaka for accessibility to submarines.
Penang War Museum, A Historical Monument

After the completion of the construction of the fort it was occupied by British, Malay and Sikh soldiers. At the time of World War II the fort came under heavy attack by the Japanese and succumbed to the forces of the Rising Sun. The fortress was utilized as a military base by the Japanese and sadly became the site for the interrogation, torture and execution of many prisoners
Due to this horrific past as a centre of military atrocities, the building was abandoned after the end of hostilities in 1945. It was only 30 years later that Johari Shafie took the initiative to transform the site into a War Museum.
Today the museum is a fascinating site where visitors may gain a genuine insight into the conduct of warfare, and the history, military equipment, culture and mode of life of the individuals who occupied the fort in years past. It is particularly interesting for those interested in getting an understanding of the history of Malaysia.

Puerta de Alcala or the Alcala Gate is located at a huge intersection and is only visible from far as it is surrounded by a large amount of traffic. The gate is deemed as a national monument and is an excellent example of neo-classical architecture and was custom made for Carlos III. This monument is designed by Francisco Sabatini and was accepted in 1778. It was intended to be the primary entrance to the Court and comprises of five granite and stone archways, three main arches bordered by two smaller ones. The top of the gate is adorned by cherubim, trophies and coat of arms which have been designed by Francisco Gutierrez.
Plaza Mayor is a grand arcaded square in the center of the city which was built by Philip III from between 1617-19. It is in the shape of a rectangular square and features a uniform architecture which has a distinct similarity with the Place des Vosges in Paris which was also built at around the same time. The buildings are mainly styled on the Renaissance theme. The square proved to be a hub for theater performances and bull fights in the olden times.
The most prominent building on the Plaza Mayor is the Casa de la Panderia which is the seat of the powerful baker's guild. It was completed in 1590 even before the square was laid out. But the square was destroyed thrice due to fires and was rebuilt.
